Redwood Lace Burl handle with a Curly Maple blade, separated by an African Blackwood band.
The handles of The Eustace come from the roots of the largest trees in the world, Redwoods commonly found on the coastal forests of Northern California. The material used in these kits is sustainably and responsibly harvested, and selected for the delicate lace pattern which gives it its name.
The Redwood is a very soft, almost foamy wood, so extra steps must be taken to ensure strength. After the handle shapes are cut, they are submerged in heat-activated resin and put under vacuum for at least 24 hours, and then soaked for another 48. This allows for optimum impregnation of resin throughout the wood. The handles are then placed in an oven and baked until the resin hardens. We then stress test the handles before proceeding on to the glue up with Curly Maple and a band of African Blackwood.
